History of Kentucky Veterans Sams Chapter

Kentucky Veterans Sams is a Chapter of the International Good Sam Club and the Kentucky Good Sam Organization. We were chartered 29 September 2012 at the Fall Samboree in Richmond, Kentucky. We are a statewide chapter consisting of honorably discharged veterans who will assume responsibility for posting the colors at each KY State Samboree. We will meet at each scheduled Samboree, and perhaps have other meetings outside this schedule. The chapter members represent a proud tradition of military service to our great nation.
The Kentucky Veterans Samís were chartered with 19 original members. They represent a proud tradition of military service to our great nation.

The chapterís first campout was April 26 & 27, 2013 at Elkhorn Campground outside of Frankfort, KY. Saturday afternoon the chapter caravanned to the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial to see the names of the 1103 Kentucky veterans who gave their all for our proud nation. This was a truly reverent and emotional time for all. From there the chapter traveled to the Kentucky Veterans Museum in Frankfort. The evening culminated with a campfire after sharing a potluck with another camping group in the campgrounds shelter. This was an outstanding start to our proud chapter. The first new member joined the chapter in May 2013.

Our second campout was held at the Kentucky Spring Samboree located at Meade County Fairgrounds in Brandenburg, KY May 30 Ė June 2, 2013. At the opening of the Samboree the Vets chapter members conducted the flag ceremony as well as retiring the flags during the closing ceremonies. They also raised funds for KY Vets through a bake sale and raffling off American and Kentucky flags that were donated after they were flown over the Kentucky State Capital in honor of the Kentucky Veterans Samís. The chapter also held a Flag Retirement Ceremony. The chapter gained three new members during the Spring Samboree. The chapter patch and vests were finalized and ordered. There were 14 members present.

Our third campout of 2013 was held in conjunction with the Kentucky Fall Samboree located at the Madison County Fairgrounds in Richmond, KY October 3 Ė 6. Once again the Kentucky Veterans Samís held the opening and closing flag ceremonies. The Vets again held a raffle to raise funds for Kentucky Veterans. The raffle was a Radio Red Flyer Wagon with a $50.00 bill and RV items donated by the members. The chapter has grown to 28 members as they gained four new members. There were 19 members present.

During the Chapterís charter year there have been many positive things going on. Raising funds to help Kentucky Veterans is the Chapterís primary charity effort. With a growth to 28 members, the Kentucky Veterans Samís have grown by 43% during their charter years.

Our membership breakdown by branch of service is as follows:

5 Navy, 18 Army, 2 Air Force, and 3 Marines with over 375 cumulative years of U.S. Military service between them.
